The multihead weigher is a versatile machine that can have configurations like 14, 24, or even 28 heads, with memory hoppers for quick discharge. It is predominantly used for weighing and packing both food and non-food items with high precision and efficiency.
History
The multihead weigher was invented by Ishida in the 1970s and quickly adopted by the food industry globally. Due to its high-speed and accurate performance, it is now widely used and produced by several manufacturers worldwide. These manufacturers often offer integrated packaging lines that combine the multihead weigher with various other packaging machines such as Vertical Form Fill and Seal bagmakers, traysealers, and inspection systems including checkweighers and X-ray systems.
How Multihead Weighing Works
A typical example might involve setting a target weight of 100 grams per pack. The product is initially fed into the top of the multihead weigher and dispersed into pool hoppers. These pool hoppers then drop the product into weigh hoppers below.
The machine's computer calculates the weight in each weigh hopper and determines the combination closest to the target weight. The selected hoppers open, and the product is discharged into a bagmaker or distribution system that places it into trays. The process utilizes gravity, vibration, or centrifugal force for dispersion, and feeding can be achieved through belts, screws, or vibration.
Adding booster hoppers increases the potential combinations for the computer, thus improving speed and accuracy.
Benefits of Multihead Weighing for Businesses
Multihead weighers offer multiple benefits for businesses, including:
Filling Bags
Multihead weighers can fill a vast range of bag sizes, from large catering packs to small, high-speed crisps packets.
Mix-Weighing
These machines can accurately mix up to eight different components at high speed. For example, a breakfast cereal with various ingredients can be accurately weighed to ensure minimal overfilling, even for expensive components.
Placing into Trays
An engineered distribution system allows the combination of speed and accuracy with the precise delivery of products into trays without spillage.

Applications
Initially used for vegetables, multihead weighers saw exponential growth in the 1970s and 1980s for quickly weighing snacks and confectionery. Their adoption extended to various products, even those harder to handle.
Sticky Products
Products like fresh meat and fish can be moved using belts or screw feeders rather than vibration.
Granules and Powders
Free-flowing granules like coffee or loose tea can be weighed efficiently on today’s multihead weighers.
Fragile Products
Design modifications have enabled the packing of delicate items like chocolates and gourmet biscuits without damage.
Complex Products
Ready meals with separate components can be accurately assembled using mix-weighing combined with tailored distribution systems.
