CHP said officers were dispatched to I-280 southbound, south of Mariposa Street about a pedestrian at around 4:30 p.m. It is not clear why there was a struggle, but CHP said a knife in possession of the pedestrian was recovered from the scene.

The pedestrian was taken to a hospital for treatment and is expected to survive.

A traffic sig-alert was issued just before 5 p.m. The lanes didn't re-open until the 9 o'clock hour.

CHP said the investigation is ongoing. The pedestrian and the officer involved have not been identified.

One man, whose online name on X is Austin Tayshus, told KTVU he was driving through the area at about 4:38 p.m. "I saw a man and an officer talking. The man looked like he was getting kind of aggressive," he said. "I saw the officer backing up and pointing at him and that was all I saw." He said it was difficult to see in the rain, and he wanted to stay focused on the road.
