The ancient Egyptians often experienced great damage to their crops and structures on the banks of the Nile. The solution to this problem came in the form of gabion-type structures.
In medieval times, gabions were used in wars as a type of inverted trench if you will, protecting soldiers from enemy fire this method proved to be so efficient that it was still used by the time the American Civil War occurred!
Even Leonardo da Vinci knew the value of gabions he even used gabions to lay the foundation of the Castello Sforzesco, located in Milan, Italy.
In recent years, civil engineers chose not to reinvent the wheel, but rather to build on the firm foundations of history: nowadays, gabions are used to secure shorelines, riverbanks, highways, and slopes against erosion.
