The concept of a SARS-CoV-2 / COVID-19 rapid test

Author: May

Oct. 07, 2024

The utilization of diagnostic and screening tests that emphasize speed, ease of use, and provide clear and reliable results is paramount in clinical environments. A lateral flow assay is a particular type of test that can identify specific analytes within a biological sample, such as pathogens or biomarkers. These assays are noted for their straightforward application and quick delivery of results concerning the presence or absence of the targeted analytes.

In the realm of COVID-19, most rapid tests employ sandwich immunoassay technology to identify the presence of SARS-CoV-2 particles. This technology operates by capturing viral antigens between a free labeled antibody and a stable second antibody – both of which are designed to recognize different parts of the antigen. Alternatively, the rapid anti-virus IgM/IgG tests adopt a similar methodology to detect human IgM and IgG antibodies generated in response to SARS-CoV-2 infection. This critical diagnostics tool helps determine whether an individual has been infected previously or is currently undergoing a viral infection, and it can offer insights into the stage of their illness.

How do COVID-19 Rapid Tests Work?

COVID-19 rapid test strip tests are equipped with a control line to verify the functionality of the test, alongside one or two test lines. The detection of analytes is qualitative and is assessed visually. Animated videos are available to illustrate the workings of the rapid test devices and the interactions within that yield the visible results.
