NoMorePlys vision is based on innovation and sustainability. Thats why we want to develop and bring to market products that do the job better, safer, and more sustainably than ever before. For many years, plywood was the number one choice for backing boards, whether fitting flooring or wall tiles, plywood was used as a level surface to lay tiles and floors on top of.
However, plywood presents many problems. It is wood, so it isnt waterproof. If it gets wet, it swells and warps and changes shape, so the tiles move out of place and are prone to crack and break. It is soft and flexible meaning, even in perfect condition, the plywood bounces when stepped on, which means the tiles flex with it and so are apt to break and crack. Plywood isnt pest-proof and so is susceptible to insect damage and mould and mildew.
Plywood is relatively cheap and can be regrown over time and was used for many years without anyone ever questioning whether there was an alternative. That is until we developed fibre cement boards to take your tiling needs to the next level.
What is a Fibre Cement Board?
Fibre cement boards are a mixture of organic cement sand, a chemical binder and organic fibre. The binder is what turns simple sand into the solid cement we use in construction across the world. The genius of fibre cement comes thanks to the addition of organic fibres.
Organic fibre does two things:
- The organic fibre bulks out the cement, so less is needed to do the same work. Moreover, it also interweaves itself through the cement. As the fibres are placed in the cement when wet, they are like threads of cloth, haphazardly overlayed on top of each other and easily tangled. Interlaying the fibres into the cement creates a stronger structure throughout the cement, meaning it wont break or snap as easily. Cement has lots of compressive strength, but its tensile strength, whilst also high can still be compromised. That means we can stand a hundred tonnes on a cement block, but if we lay it over an edge and hit it with a hammer it snaps easily. Adding fibres to the cement dramatically increases the tensile strength and allows the concrete to flex and bend, and not simply snap and break.
- The fibres are also insulative. Cement doesnt hold much heat, but organic fibres are much better insulators than rocks and minerals like the sand we use to make cement. They prevent heat from escaping much more efficiently, meaning that the cement is stronger and a better insulator. This mixture of organic cement and organic fibres is mixed is pressed into boards and allowed to dry before being used as tile backing boards in flooring and wall tiles.
What Is The Difference Between Cement Boards and Fibre Cement Boards?
Simply put, there isnt one. Its two different names for the same object. Organic fibre is so synonymous with cement boards, that you wouldnt expect to find a cement board that isnt infused with fibre. Thats why over time people just come to call them cement boards as the fibre part is implied.
This is because, without the fibre, the cement boards would have a weaker tensile strength and be prone to snapping, so wouldnt do very well as a tile backer board. This is because tile backing boards need to be thin, and strong. However, thin sheets of concrete are brittle, so, adding fibre is necessary to enhance its strength and make the board fit for purpose.
What Are The Advantages of Fibre Cement Boards?
Fibre cement boards were used to replace plywood, but fibre cement isnt just better than plywood, it is simply the best material for the job.
- Fibre cement is water resistant. A few droplets are not going to have much effect on the fibre cement. Therefore, fibre cement board is the perfect tile backer for kitchens.
- To place the fibre cement in a bathroom, a place expected to be wet a lot of the time, we simply add a little primer, and we transform the cement board from water-resistant to waterproof. No amount of sealant or treatment can prevent the plywood from being susceptible to water damage. It will swell, warp and rot when exposed to moisture, so is a poor choice to have in wet rooms such as the bathroom or kitchen.
- Fibre cement is also incombustible, which means that no matter how hard you try, you cant set it on fire. This makes sense, even with the presence of fibres, the entire constituents of cement is rock, a hard mineral that wont burn or set on fire. That means it is an A1-rated fire safety material, so its good to go in any building and will add a layer of fireproofing to wherever it is set.
- Fibre cement is rigid, so unlike plywood, it does not warp or bounce as you step on it. Therefore, your tiles stay exactly where you laid them and arent susceptible to cracking apart under the continued pressure of people walking over the top of them.
- Despite its organic origins, fibre cement is not an organic material, so, pests wont consider it as a source of food. You can be certain that fibre cement is also pest-proof.
- Thanks to its woven fibres, the fibre cement boards are extremely insulative, even being an excellent choice for underfloor heating, as the insulative properties can reflect heat back into the house, meaning no heat is lost into the floor through your underfloor heating.
Fibre Cement Board, Miracle Product
As you can see, there isnt a disadvantage to using fibre cement board. It ticks every box and some, it replaces plywood as the best material for laying floors and walls and has some interesting properties that could be applied elsewhere in construction too. Fibre cement doesnt degrade or break down, once it has been formed into its boards, it stays that way forever.
This is why NoMorePly offers a lifetime guarantee Lifetime Product Guarantee. If the cement boards are installed properly, with the right tools and following the NoMorePly guidelines, we can guarantee that those boards will last you a lifetime.
No need to replace old plywood boards or come back and treat them again. Once a fibre cement board is laid, it will stay in place and do its job perfectly for the course of its life.
Fibre cement is a wonder material and I hope today you have learned a little about one of our most treasured products and feel as enthusiastic about it now, as we have always done.

FIBER CEMENT BOARD
What Is Fiber Cement Board?
Fiber cement board is a durable and low-maintenance building material that is commonly used on residential homes and, in some cases, commercial buildings. Fiber cement board is manufactured with cellulose fibers, along with cement and sand.
Fiber Cement Board Advantages
One of the most desirable qualities of fiber cement board is that it is so durable. Unlike wood board, fiberboard does not rot or require frequent repainting. It is fireproof, insect resistant, and performs well in natural disasters.
